Fire Extinguisher - Fire Extinguishers - Portable Fire Extinguishers - Powder-based Fire Extinguishers - Water-based Fire Extinguisher

Extinguisher - Sylprotec - 2008

This section contains general information on Fire Extinguishers and the types of fire that each model was designed to extinguish.

Fire Extinguishers are cylindrical containers pressurized with a fire-extinguishing agent whose content is expelled by a gas. To be authorized for sale in Canada, Extinguishers must be approved by the Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada. The logo of the ULC will appear on the product’s label. As in nature, extinguishing agents come in 3 different shapes: solid, liquid and gas. Accordingly, the ULC classification will indicate a given Fire Extinguisher’s efficiency at fighting a certain type of fire.

Portable Fire Extinguishers are vital safety equipment components of a building and certain outdoor events. Such Extinguishers are also compulsory, even if your building is equipped with a sprinkler system. Portable Fire Extinguishers are used when a fire breaks out, while a sprinkler system will be triggered when the fire is out of control.

Fires are divided into 5 categories, each requiring an appropriate Extinguisher. Commercially sold Portable Fire Extinguishers come in various forms, depending on the type of fire they are designed to fight efficiently. No matter the type, Sylprotec is sure to have the Extinguisher you need.

Before choosing an Extinguisher, you must first evaluate your exposure in terms of risk and type of fire.  The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) devised a letter-based classification for Fire Extinguishers:

Fire extinguishers - Fire extinguishers covers - Sylprotec
  • A: Extinguishers for common combustible materials such as wood, paper, cloth, mattresses;
  • B: Extinguishers for flammable liquids such as gasoline, petroleum-based solvents, plastic, etc.;
  • C: Extinguishers for live equipment such as electrical panels, electronic equipment, control rooms, etc.;
  • D: Extinguishers for combustibles containing magnesium, sodium, potassium or a mix of sodium and potassium;
  • K: Extinguishers for grease fires such as those that break out in restaurants, cafeterias and other commercial kitchens.

Portable Fire Extinguishers may contain various extinguishing agents, each with specific applications. Each fire calls for a specific type of Extinguisher. For example, a fire burning from wood and paper can be extinguished with a regular water-based Fire Extinguisher (A), a distilled water-based Extinguisher (AC) or a powder-based Fire Extinguisher (ABC). Ultimately, the choice of Extinguisher will depend on your specific needs. If your immediate environment includes a potential risk for contamination or electric fire, you will then exclude water-based Fire Extinguisher (A) and powder-based Fire Extinguishers (ABC).
